Battle of Armageddon
Battle of Armageddon

In this blog I will share what the Bible says about the Antichrist’s destruction. We would do well to remember that in the future this man will set himself up to be God and will be worshiped in the temple at Jerusalem. II Thessalonians 2:4 says of the Antichrist, “He opposes and exalts himself above every so called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God’s sanctuary, publicizing that he himself is God.” Just a casual reading of the Bible will lead to understanding that God destroys anyone or anything that attempts to usurp His position. It may take some time for this destruction to take place but it will come. It has been said the hands of God’s justice may turn slow but they continually turn. Therefore we can anticipate when we read in II Thessalonians 2:4 that the Antichrist has set himself up as God that God will indeed deal with him. You have to read just 4 verses until you see God’s plans for the Antichrist. II Thessalonians 2:8 reads, “The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of His mouth and will bring him to nothing with the brightness of His coming.” When Christ returns the Antichrist will be brought to nothing by the Lord’s appearing.

This event in prophecy is described in Revelation chapter 19. In Revelation 19:11-16 you read of the glorious coming of the Lord. These verses culminate in verse 16 with the inscription that will be on the Lord’s robe, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.  Allow me to share with  you in sermon outline form what will happen according to Revelation 19:19-21 to the Antichrist when the Lord returns.

1. WE SEE A WAR. (VS.19)

Revelation 19:19 “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. ”

All the armies of the world will gather with the Antichrist to make war against the One who sits on the horse and his army. That is Jesus, His angels, Old Testament saints and Christians. It is worth noting in verse 14 that the Lord’s armies that come with him will be clothed in white. They are not going to battle so they do not need fatigues and military garb. The Lord will fight this battle Himself.

There are many theories given to why these armies will gather at Megiddo to begin with. I offer one suggestion why they would gather to battle Christ. Remember II Thessalonians 2:10, 11 describes those who have rejected Christ before the tribulation period begins will at some point have a delusion sent on them by God that they might believe a lie. I believe that delusion is they will believe the Antichrist is God. The armies of the world follow their god into battle against Jesus. Jesus came the first time and the world opposed Him. It is not hard to believe the world will oppose Him when He returns again.

2. WE SEE A WORD. (VS. 21)

Revelation 19:21 “And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”

The Antichrist will be a man of eloquent speech. He will use words to motivate people to do his deeds. He will motive the world to persecute Israel and the saints saved during the tribulation. He will use his words and signs to motivate people to worship his image. He will use words to gather the armies of the world against Jesus. He will be a man of words.

It is ironic with one word he and his empire will be finished. Jesus spoke a word and the world came into being. Jesus spoke a word and Lazarus was raised from the dead. Jesus spoke a word and the fig tree withered. Jesus spoke a word and demons came out of the demoniac. He speaks a word and the Battle of Armageddon will be over. His sword is the words that come from His mouth. According to verse 21 all the armies of the world fed the birds. The vultures have been summoned in verses 17 and 18 that they may eat the flesh of the armies that oppose the One that sits on the horse and whose name is KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

3. WE SEE WISDOM. (VS. 20)

Revelation 19:20 “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshiped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.”

It seems that the order of this battle will be that Jesus will take the Beast, which is the Antichrist, and the False Prophet which preached the gospel of the Antichrist and will cast them into the lake of fire. These two will be the first inhabitants of the lake of fire. Once Jesus has dealt with the Antichrist and the False Prophet then He deals with the armies which followed them. Jesus in His wisdom allows all the world’s armies to see their god judged by the Righteous Judge. There will be no mistaking who is God. Jeremiah 10:6 reads, “No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.” So in verse 20 we see the Antichrist will have a final home in the lake of fire. This man who was exalted will be cast down and Jesus will be exalted forever more.

So it ends rather anticlimactically; after seven years of tribulation on earth the armies of the world follow the Antichrist to Megiddo to battle Jesus. There is not much to this battle. He speaks a word and this man of sin is done away with. For centuries people have studied various aspects of the Antichrist. He is cast down in an instance. Jesus is indeed KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

  1. Thank you for your proclaiming of God’s word. Your words help tremendously in understanding the Word of God and just makes me thirst for more. Although passages are read many times there is always something new that can be revealed. Thank you for being a preacher of God’s word from the Bible. Much better than getting entangled in things of a “topical nature”.

  2. Stan, thank you for the encouraging words. I am grateful to God for His wonderful Word and for VBC’s desire to learn His Word.
